A closer look at Cookham's Commons

Tuesday 12th May, 10am - 12 noon
Maidenhead Thicket
£5

The Commons of Cookham and Maidenhead are among our most special local places. They date back to early mediaeval times, a crucial source of food and sustenance for the many families who had rights to graze animals, grow crops, take wood and other benefits.

The remaining Commons, spread across Cookham and neighbouring parts of Maidenhead, are the survivors of several attempts by local landowners to enclose them in the 19th century.  Today they provide a wonderful natural world, a place for exercise and discovery, rich in a wide range of flora and fauna.  Our walk is an opportunity to learn about this history and to gain insights into the plant, insects, birds and other wildlife.

Local historians and naturalists, as well as one of the National Trust Rangers, will be our guides. Please ensure that you wear the appropriate clothing and footwear for the terrain and anticipated weather.

The two-hour walk takes us through Maidenhead Thicket, starting and finishing at Stubbings Garden Centre where you will be able to buy refreshments in the cafe after the walk.  Parking is available at the Garden Centre, off Henley Road, SL6 6QL.

Tickets on sale March.
