Richard Poad - Doctor at the Dean: The life and times of Cookham's village doctor 1911 - 1940
Monday 11th May, 2.30pm
First Floor Barn, The Gantry
£10
Discover how a forgotten box of documents transformed into a vivid portrait of Cookham’s past. In this fascinating talk, Dr Robert Shepard’s passports, wedding certificate, dog licences, household bills and even receipts for meat, seeds and medicinal brandy reveal 30 years of everyday life — what he and his young wife ate, drank, drove and enjoyed.
Their story also includes a moving family tragedy.
The talk is given by Richard Poad, long-time Cookham resident and founder trustee of Maidenhead Heritage Centre. A noted authority on the Air Transport Auxiliary, Richard is an engaging speaker who also leads the annual River Thames Historical Cruise.
